Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
Help for all relative caregivers of children
About Us

Our advocacy adventure began in 1998.  Tina and Nina had met at a grandparent support group meeting.  They attended meetings every week and shared with others their stories and frustrations.  When they realized that complaining wasn’t making a difference they decided to form GrandParents United DE and became incorporated.  Educating themselves and the general public to the unmet barriers caregivers faced became their mission.  They found their voice and began to advocate to all caregivers in Delaware.  They asked questions and learned policy and volunteered so that their networking community could grow. As a result of their advocacy work Delaware has a Kinship Care Program. Over the years they have many accomplishments including developing Chapters in each county who hold support group meetings lead by caregivers themselves.

New staff came on board at GrandParents United and we have grown, and made changes!

In 2007 GPU new changes to GPU.  We have had new members come on board to join, support, help with  growth and make more changes for relative caregivers.  Some of these have resulted in having brought forth Standby Guardianship Bill, Guardian Assistance Program (GAP), and mentoring program for grandchildren in New Castle County. Relative Caregivers in Delaware are now receiving support, respect and recognition for raising the next generation.

Our Vision, Objective, & Goals

 Vision
§
To promote, protect and provide for the children in our care who have been removed from the care of their parents.

§  To insure that all children will be nurtured by caregivers with resources and support.

§
To see a day when all children are supported equally.

  Objective

§   Promote awareness of the need to provide resources to grandparents and other kinship caregivers who have assumed the responsibility for these children.

§
Provide financially for these at risk children through resources that are already available to children raised by foster parents.

§
Prepare these children for productive lives.

  Goals

 §

Educate the public and enlist support from legislators to provide resources for the care of these children who would otherwise be lost in the formal foster care system.

§
Encourage the caregivers though support and resources to enable them to successfully provide for the needs of the children.

§
Establish networks of grandparents and relative caregivers to provide for sharing and mutual support for those in similar situations.

                                                  History about our Ribbon

When Nina decided we needed a ribbon to wear to show our concern for our cause, the color purple has been used to signify abuse survivors.  So many of our children are survivors of abuse, many have been abandoned and still now many continue to experience deep pain because of their feelings of abandonment. "When I saw this pain in such small children's eyes, I felt that should somehow be shown through our ribbon, hence the pearls."  They are meant to signify the tears of the children.
